This is the home of automobile road tests in South Africa. I drive South African cars, SUVs and LCVs under real-world South African conditions. Many of the vehicles driven are world cars as well, so what you read here possibly applies to the models you get where you live.
My most recent drive is on the home page. Archived reviews and opinion pieces are in the active menu down the left side. Hover your cursor over a heading or manufacturer's name and follow the drop-down.
Editor's note: SA Roadtests accepts multi-day vehicle loans from manufacturers in order to provide editorial reviews. All vehicle reviews are conducted on our turf and on our terms.
For out-of-province vehicle launch features however, travel costs are covered by the manufacturer concerned. This is common in the motor industry, as it's more economical to ship journalists to cars than to ship cars to journalists.
Judgments and opinions expressed on this site are our own. We do not accept paid editorial content or ads of any kind.
Built on the slightly shorter hatchback version of the Mègane platform, the new-to SA GT replaces the range-topping Dynamique, with a turbocharged 120 kW version of Renault’s two-litre power plant and kitted out with sportier appointments.
Aimed at those who enjoy sporty performance but like their creature comforts as well, the GT is part of a new wave of compact road burners currently sweeping Europe.
On the outside, there is a new front spoiler and chrome finished radiator grille surrounds plus side skirts, a hatch airfoil, special 16-inch aluminium wheels in a dark metallic finish and aggressive dual exhaust outlets in chrome, topped by in-your-face GT badging.
On the inside, body-hugging seats (height-adjustable on the driver’s side), a leather trimmed wheel that is adjustable for height and reach, aluminium-accented pedals and yet another GT badge, plus purposeful grey dials and a chunky aircraft-style handbrake lever, remind you that this hatch is made for Motoring.
Making it go, the 1998cc motor develops 120 kW at 5000 rpm and 270 Nm of torque at 3250 rpm, but the curve is so broad and flat, that flooring the throttle from almost any speed results in a gorgeous power surge that just wants to go on and on, until the rev limiter kicks in. The motor is so smooth that you need to keep a close eye on the rev counter, changing up before the fun comes to an end.
Keeping it all on the road, specially calibrated shock absorbers, improved rear axle location, stiffer front and rear anti-sway bars, stiffer springs and suspension 10 mm lower than on the Dynamique, add up to a handling package that makes you want to keep on driving forever. The amazing part is that all this good stuff comes without sacrificing comfort – thank the boffins with their computers for modern miracles. Steering response and accuracy are optimised by special settings for the variable-ratio electric power steering.
To bring everything to a halt, 280 mm vented discs in front and 240 mm solid units at the rear are helped along by the ubiquitous ABS and his helpers, Mr. EBD and Ms. EBA (electronic brake force distribution and electronic brake assist).
While this sporty hatch concentrates firstly on the comfort requirements of pilot and prime passenger, those in the rear are adequately catered for as well. Headroom is plentiful for six-footers, while rear legroom is OK but limited by the fact that this body is 50 mm shorter than that of the Scenic. Baggage room is listed as 406 litres, expandable by tumbling the back seats, to 1840 litres.
“So what’ll she do, Mister?” Zero to 100 km/h comes up in 8,3 seconds, while top speed is claimed to be 220 km/h.
This tester, particular but not obsessive, could find no fault with build quality while everything behaved as it should during the test period. To reassure those who have heard dire tales of French cars’ quality and reliability in recent times, however, Renault are backing up all new Mèganes with a 5 year/150 000 km warranty and a 5 year/60 000km service plan.

Recommended retail price of the Renault Mègane GT at time of writing was R222 000.
Engine and performance: See text
This is a one-man show, which means that every car reviewed is given my personal evaluation and receives my own seat of the pants judgement - no second hand input here.
Every test car goes through real world driving; on city streets littered with potholes, speed bumps and rumble strips, on freeways and if its profile demands, dirt roads or goat tracks as well. As a result, my test cars do occasionally get dirty. It's all part of the reviewing process.
I do my best to include relevant information like real life fuel economy or a close mathematical calculation, boot size or luggage space, whether the space is both usable and accessible, whether life-sized people can use the back seat (where that applies), basic specs of the vehicle and performance figures if they are published. In the case of clearly identified launch reports, fuel figures are of necessity the laboratory numbers provided with the release material.
If ever I place an article that doesn't cover most things, it's probably because I have dealt with a very similar vehicle already, so you will be able to find what you want in another report under the same manufacturer's heading in the menu on the left.
Hope you like what you see, because there are no commercial interests at work here. There are no advertisers and no “editorial policy” rules. I add bylines to acknowledge sponsored launch functions and the manufacturers or dealerships that provide the test vehicles. And, as quite a few readers have found, I answer every serious enquiry from my home email address, with my phone numbers attached, so you can see I do actually exist.
Comments or questions?
Want to ask a question, comment or just tell me you completely disagree with what I say? If you want advice or have a genuine concern, I will be happy to hear from you. All I ask is that you write something in the subject line so I know which vehicle you're talking about.
